  • Green Initiatives in Bermuda

Bermuda is implementing several green initiatives, including ambitious renewable energy goals (85% renewable energy by 2035), transitioning to 100% electric public transport by 2030, and initiatives to reduce single-use plastics. The island is also focused on marine protection through programs like the Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme, which aims to protect 20% of its Exclusive Economic Zone, and the Bermuda Seagrass Project to restore seagrass habitats. Other efforts include the Bermuda Micro Forest Project, which plants native trees, and the ongoing recovery program for the Bermuda Cahow.

    Energy and transportation
Renewable energy goals: The government aims to reach 85% renewable energy by 2035, with projects including a 21 MW solar project at the airport and a 60 MW wind project.
Electric public transport: The public bus fleet is being converted to 100% electric vehicles by 2030.
Integrated Resource Plan: This plan guides the transition to clean energy, focusing on reducing fossil fuel dependence and exploring wind and wave energy.

    Marine conservation
Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme: This initiative works to protect 20% of the island's Exclusive Economic Zone and promote a sustainable blue economy.

Marine protected areas: Bermuda has nearly 300 square kilometers of marine protected areas.
Banning fish pots: The use of fish pots has been banned to improve marine stewardship.
Bermuda Seagrass Project: This project focuses on creating carbon sequestration, restoring seagrass habitats, and providing a unique educational and tourism opportunity.

    Plastic reduction and waste management

Beyond Plastic Bermuda: This initiative was formed to work with the government to eliminate single-use plastics.
ReDo Bermuda: This organization offers reusable alternatives to disposable items to reduce waste.
Water and waste masterplan: The government has developed a masterplan to manage waste and water treatment.

    Biodiversity and natural habitats
Bermuda Cahow recovery program: A successful, long-running program aims to protect the endemic Cahow seabird, which was once considered extinct.
Bermuda Micro Forest Project: Modeled on the Miyawaki method, this project is creating small, dense forests of native plants to promote biodiversity and sequester carbon.
